Most couples start their photographer search the same way: scrolling Instagram, saving a few grids that feel right, then booking a call. That first instinct is a good one — but the questions you ask on that call matter more than the portfolio that got you there.

1. How do you shoot, not just what do you shoot?

Two studios can use the phrase "candid, cinematic photography" and mean completely different things. Ask how a photographer actually moves through a wedding day — do they direct moments, or wait for them? Do they shoot from a distance, or work close and visible? The answer tells you more about your actual wedding-day experience than any sample gallery.

2. What happens if something goes wrong?

Weather changes, timelines slip, a key relative arrives two hours late. A studio’s answer to "what’s your backup plan" reveals how many weddings they’ve actually shot versus how good their marketing is.

3. Who is actually on-site on your date?

Some studios book you on the strength of a founder’s portfolio, then send a different team on the day. Ask directly who will be shooting, and ask to see work specifically from that person or team.

4. What’s the turnaround, honestly?

Not the marketing-page number — the real, typical number, including during peak wedding season. A studio that gives you a straight, slightly conservative answer is usually more reliable than one that promises the fastest possible timeline.

5. Can we see one full gallery, start to finish?

Highlight reels and portfolio grids are curated by definition. A full, unedited-for-marketing gallery from a real wedding tells you what your own gallery will actually look like — including the ordinary, in-between moments, not just the best fifteen shots.
